Brief Description
of the Collaboratory :
|
|
The Center for Behavioral Neuroscience (CBN) provides resources to foster innovative research in behavioral neuroscience, with a specific focus on the neurobiology of social behavior. A consortium of more than 60 CBN researchers working in collaboratories use diverse model systems from invertebrates to humans, as well as computational models, to investigate fear, aggression, social affiliation, and reproduction behaviors across multiple species. Six technology cores (molecular neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, neuroimaging, computational, and behavioral technology) develop the cellular, molecular, computational, and systems-level tools essential for investigating how the brain influences complex social behavior and, in turn, how social experience influences brain function.
In addition to scientific discovery, the CBN hopes to train the next generation of behavioral neuroscientists and to increase the number of women and under-represented minorities in neuroscience. Its major discoveries are licensed with biotechnology partners.
The CBN also emphasizes community outreach, particularly K-12 students, through a variety of presentations, exhibits, and hands-on training.

Services are offered through six cores. The services are available to the CBN affiliated members. Descriptions of the cores are listed below:
"The Molecular Core develops cDNA microarrays for multiple model systems to profile gene expression either from microdissected brain areas or from individual neurons."
"The Cellular Core develops monoclonal antibodies to characterize proteins involved in behaviorally-relevant circuits and viral vectors to deliver behaviorally-relevant transcripts of proteins to specific regions or cell types."
"The Systems Core focuses on multiunit recording of populations of neurons within specific brain regions."
"The Imaging Core provides the expertise to visualize and interpret brain activation during a behavioral task using PET or fMRI with both rodents and primates."
"The Computational Core provides the expertise to model complex neural circuits using digital technology."
"The Behavioral Core develops technologies to accurately capture and quantify complex social interactions in diverse model systems."
